Between 1930 and 1980 bicycle racing was the most important sport in Zeeland. Everyone assembled around the church to watch the race: men peddling fiercely with mud-stained faces, heroes raced around the church on thin tyres before disappearing again into the windy dykes on their way to the next village. The history of these races is a history of Zeeland in microcosm, explored in this exhibition through old film footage and interviews with great racing champions. The publication contains a report by a writer and photographer who, together with a guide, have made a road trip along the ‘lieux de memoires’ of Zeeland’s bicycle races.
